Washington Research Center, Documents of the Christian Committee for the Defense of Believers’ Rights in the USSR, Volume 5, Part I, Russian texts, Moscow, 1978. In this open letter dated October 16, 1978, the Christian Committee informs Archpriest loan Meyendorf that the present warden of the Nikolo-Kuznetsky Church in Moscow, Aleksandr Shushpanov, is an agent of the KGB. (Meyendorf visited the Nikolo-Kuznetsky Church earlier this year with an American church delegation that consisted of members of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church in America and of the Representation of the Moscow Patriarchate in New York.) The letter states that Shushpanov was an interpreter at the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department of External Church Relations until his exposure as a KGB agent, whereupon he was «transfered» to the post of churchwarden.
