Any talk about doing away with the priestly celibacy requirements, far from easing the priests identity crisis, could only make it more acute, he said.
Addressing French bishops on a visit to the Vatican, the Pope recalled the decision of the 1971 World Synod of Bishops against conferring priestly ordination in the Western Rite Catholic Church to married men.
The ban does not apply to Eastern Rite Catholics, who have traditionally admitted married men as priests.
